Back pain and hind-leg weakness are symptoms, not a diagnosis. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) occurs when the cushioning discs between vertebrae bulge or rupture and compress the spinal cord. Chondrodystrophic breeds (Dachshunds and similar) are famous for it, but any dog can be affected. Signs range from reluctance to jump to complete paralysis. Sudden inability to walk should never simply be watched overnight without veterinary advice. What you do next depends mainly on pain level, motor function, and whether deep pain sensation is present — assessments a clinician performs.
